Airport Briefing - LSGS Sion

Post by OAL269 Kyprianos Biris »

Briefing:
Europe's steepest IGS approach at 6,0 degrees ! surrounded by dangerous mountains.

Located in the heart of the Valais Alps Switzerland close to France, Italy and Switzerland border, Sion Airport is right next to ski resorts such as Verbier, les 4 vallées, Crans-Montana, Saas-fee & Zermatt.

Sion is a mixed MIL & CIV use airport with Swiss Air Force units due to leave in 2016.

The 1.581 ft. elevation airport has 2.000m long runway surrounded closely by high rising mountains in all quadrants.
Only instrument approach available is an 6 degree offset IGS approach for Runway 25 (runway 252* - Localizer 246*) from east with populated built up area on final approach.

Read very carefully the IGS approach charts (link further down) and MISSED APPROACH procedure before executing them because things happen very fast in this approach.

APPROACH PROCEDURE in practice:
Runway 25 offset IGS approach is one of the hardest in Europe.

Arrivals from south (from LGAV) bring you via abeam AOSTA and BANKO fix* in GRANA HOLD at FL170 based on an outbound radial/DME fix from SIO VOR or IGS Localizer backcourse / DME fix !

*When passing BANKO for VALOR (see attached area chart)
LSGS_area.pdf
on your left side you can see Mont Blanc, Europe's highest peak at 15.781 ft.

Arrivals from north (from EGLC) bring you direct in to GRANA hold.

After leaving GRANA approach IAF an RNAV set of points are followed to 32 nm ! east of the airport at FL170 for a left turn in to the IGS. B-RNAV capability required as per chart note, no VOR/DME/NDB navigation on this portion.

The "dive" is the initiated (Trans. Alt. 17.000ft) from MASAB to ALETO points for 16,000ft ft at which point the ISI IGS is captured 26 nm from the airport.

The approach terminates a 7 dme on the ISI IGS (4.120ft on the glide) from where the rest has to continue visually with the 3.5 degree PAPI lights or go MISSED APPROACH if not visual.

At this portion there must be a (prepared in advance) switch from ISI IGS to SIO VOR DME track 250* inbound guidance since it defines the MISSED APPROACH which is on prescribed radial and DME in between high rising mountains.

Runway 07 is approached only visually with CIRCLING approach NORTH abeam the airport by breaking off the IGS approach and flying just on the north border of Sion city and
