Airport Briefing - LSZA Lugano

Post by OAL269 Kyprianos Biris »

Briefing:
Europe's steepest IGS approach at 6,65 degrees !

Read very carefully the IGS approach charts (link further down) and MISSED APPROACH procedure before executing them because things happen very fast at this approach and its transition from instrument to visual part.

Charts:
VACC Switzerland

APPROACH PROCEDURE in practice:
Runway 01 has two PAPI sets one for the IGS and one for VISUAL approach.
The top (north) PAPI is for the 6,65 angle IGS but it is set lower at 6,0 degrees (the Glideslope MINIMUM) so it is normal to see 4 WHITES during the initial descent on the glideslope.
Note: The IGS in FS is actually 6,7 degrees due to software limitations.
Proceed as per IGS Rwy 01 chart.
DO NOT fly below IGS Glide Slope at any time before reaching ILU DME 3,0 - 3.050ft. AMSL due to TERRAIN right below the approach path
After this point you can "dive" to catch and follow the bottom (south) PAPI which is, also steep, set at 4,17 degrees glide until the threshold.
Expect to consume more runway due the steep approach so use minimum Vref possible with full flaps and use spoilers on touchdown.
Missed Approach Point (MAP) is at ILU DME 1,5 (G/S 2070ft. AMSL) but this is the latest point depending on your Decision Altitude (DA).
PAPIs are still all white at this point.
If not visual by this point execute missed approach immediately per approach chart.
Consult chart for your Decision Altitude (DA) because depending on missed approach climb gradient it rises significantly.
If visual at this point execute the "dive" to catch and follow the bottom (south) PAPI which is, also steep, set at 4,17 degrees glide until the threshold.

For Runway 19 you use the same IGS01 procedure but continue with the CIRCLE-TO-LAND WITH PRESCRIBED FLIGHT TRACKS per provided charts.
Watch carefully SPEED and BANK ANGLE on base due to increased stall speed due to G forces.

Flight Plan Alternate: LIML Milan Linate

This is an example of how the approach can go wrong and stay high on short final if the procedure is not followed properly.

FlyLogic LSZS scenery IMPORTANT file:
Replace AF2_LSZA.BGL.bgl (rename it) with this file
LSZA_ADEX_KB.rar
in FLYLOGIC scenery to have correct ILS frequency per charts (old was 108.90 new is 111,50), LOCalizer track (old is offset due to mag var) and GLIDESLOPE angle.

Freeware scenery from flightsim.com has a bit lower G/S angle at 6.5 degrees.

If you have no detailed mesh terrain for the area, highly recommended are the following freeware:

Mesh Alpes LOD11 v2 by Guy Nemoz

Priority LOWER
