Airport Briefing - LSZS Samedan

Post by OAL269 Kyprianos Biris »

Samedan LSZS airport in Switzerland is Europe's highest elevation airport (at 5,600 ft. AMSL) situated in a canyon of the Swiss Alps serving the luxurious vacations of St. Moritz.

This airport is a day, VMC conditions operations only with visual circling procedures.
In 2017 it got GNSS non precision instrument approaches down to 3.220 ft. AGL.

Weather Minima:
VISUAL APPROACH
Airport environment visual from 12.000 ft. AMSL

VISUAL DEPARTURE:
8km visibility - 2.200ft. AGL (7.800 AMSL) cloud base

INSTRUMENT APPROACH:
Refer to briefing PDF but basically the below minima should exist:
Rwy 03
Visibility 6.5km - Cloud bass 6.500 ft. AGL (12.100 AMSL)
Rwy 21
Visibility 5km - Cloud base 3.220ft. AGL (8.820 AMSL)

A demanding visual descent in to a canyon, in between steep rising terrain, is required to make the visual approaches for both runways with a steep 4.4* degrees final approach portion guided by the PAPI's.
Still, executive jets up to Boeing 737(BBJ) size approach the airport often in the winter peak season with these procedures.

Flightsimmers' visual approach Briefing:
LSZS - Samedan visual approach chart v3
VERY IMPORTANT information. Do not fly there without the briefing.
This is for the VISUAL approach.

For the Instrument RNAV(GNSS) approach approach see the post further down.

Flight Plan Alternate: LSZR Altenrhein

The approaches to runway 03 & 21 and their SIDs were tested with OAV Executive's B737 BBJ and they can be executed without problems.

Samedan RNAV (GNSS) procedures from Switzerland AIP issued in February 2017.

Just google "LS_Sup_A_2017_002_en.pdf" and download that PDF.
Its SWISS AIP's charts for Samedan.

In February 2017 Navigraph also included the RNAV procedures in their AIRAC data.

Samedan LSZS airport Familiarization briefing

OAV Executive's B737 and A319 aircraft can approach and land at Samedan with proper planning provided they carry weights of executive configuration, i.e. 30~30 passengers max. With these loads the two aircraft types can perform adequately in Samedan's conditions.

In below link you can read the full airport Familiarization briefing for Samedan LSZS.

https://dokumen.tips/documents/familiar ... ilots.html

Below are the important facts about the airport and its IFR approaches:

RUNWAY 03/21
1.800 X 40m
ELEVATION 5.600 ft. AMSL

Two RNP IFR approaches from EAST & WEST.

The RNP approaches specify Minima :
11.400 ft. AMSL from west (approach 03)
9.500 ft. AMSL from east (approach 21)
The airport is at 5.600 ft. AMSL
If the aircraft reaches the minima (MDA) and runway is not in sight a GO AROUND shall be executed and either a diversion or a new approach shall be executed.

For Samedan, in days that the weather is not forecast for clear VMC, it is important to have EXTRA FUEL for possible Diversions.
Best ALTERNATES are Zurich LSZH 77nm NORTWEST and Milan Linate LIML 70nm SOUTH

The IFR approach procedures are of RNP Guidance type (enhanced GPS lateral and vertical paths) emulating a "virtual" ILS for lateral & vertical guidance up to the visual segment of each approach.

The IFR approach visual minima are quite high altitudes due to the terrain surrounding the airport.

After the IFR minima the pilot shall be able to continue the VISUAL segment of 4.4 degrees steep descent or else a Go Around/Diversion shall be executed.

Therefore the weather conditions are very important especially for Winter periods.
FORECAST and METARs therefore shall be carefully monitored before/during the flight to Samedan.

The minima for approaches to Samedan:

5.798 AGL (11.400 AMSL) for Rwy 03 approach with RVR at least 5.000m

3.927 AGL (9.500 AMSL) for Rwy 21 approach with RVR at least 5.000m

So in essence if the cloud base or visibility is below the above minima, the approaches shall not even be initiated.

All of the above are for Daytime only operations (SR-30' to SS+30')
Night time approaches are not allowed.

Because of 5.600 ft. Airport Elevation, pilots must properly plan for DENSITY ALTITUDE and the effect on Airspeed (higher ground speed due to thinner air) like for example TAKE OFF Distance Roll to clear 50 ft.
