Airport Briefing - LIPB Bolzano

Post by OAL269 Kyprianos Biris »

Briefing:
Europe's steepest non precision offset LOC DME approach at 6,50 degrees ! surrounded by dangerous mountains.

Bolzano in south Tyrol is gateway to Dolomiti Alps of Italy.

The 772 ft. elevation airport has 1.294m long runway surrounded closely by high rising mountains in 3 quadrants (W,N and E) and densely populated city just north of the runway.
Only instrument approach available is an 8 degree offset Localizer DME approach for Runway 01 (runway 008* - Localizer 017*) from south or an offset VOR DME approach from south.

Read very carefully the LOC DME approach charts (link further down) and MISSED APPROACH procedure before executing them because things happen very fast at this approach and there are traps that can confuse you.

APPROACH PROCEDURE in practice:
Runway 01 offset LOC DME approach is one of the hardest in Europe.
Arrivals bring you in FORER HOLD at FL120 based on OZE VOR
After leaving FORER FL120 (also the approach IAF) the "dive" is initiated to catch the IBZ LOCalizer 9,5 DME at a 12.5 nm distance from FORER at 6.400ft AMSL.
At this portion the switch from OZE VOR DME to IBZ offset Localizer takes place and pilots can get confused.
FS aircraft (autopilot) most probably will not be able to track the localizer (FS issue) and again pilots get confused there.
It has to be flown by hand.
Steep 6,5* manual (no glideslope) descent is then followed on the LOC until MDA of 2.930ft AMSL (2.158 ft AGL).
Once visual you can continue with the PAPI which are set at 4,48* degrees glide.

Runway 19 is approached only visually with CIRCLING approach WEST of the airport by breaking off the LOCalizer approach or with prescribed visual tracks after OZE VOR.

Flight Plan Alternate: LOWI Innsbruck

BONUS:
From LIPB you will find an amazing sloped runway dirt strip ALTIPORT called PASSO TONALE (LIP2 fictional ICAO) 6,188ft up on a pitched mountain slope very close to the Italy-Switzerland border crossing.
The strip is located 32nm bearing 245 from LIPB but you can't fly straight there.
The rest is for you to find out !
